What is Acupuncture / Medical Acupuncture?
Acupuncture can also be known as Medical Acupuncture or Dry Needling. Acupuncture is the process of affecting muscle and fascia through needles of which normal soft tissue therapy may not work. LIVEWELL Health offer Acupuncture and Medical Acupuncture (Dry Needling).
This service is primarily in Birmingham and across the West Midlands but are looking to expand this service across the UK in line with our current UK wide coverage.
First, let us explain what the difference is between Acupuncture and Medical Acupuncture. Acupuncture is a form of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and has been around for thousands of years, and there are many approaches to learning and practising it. Acupuncture can be varied in its uses from Muscular Issues through to psychological issues. It can help people with issues around Stress, anxiety, fertility, ibs and much more and is usually practice by someone who has had 3 years study in the subject. Acupuncture can also be used with Electrodes, Heat and other attachments to get the best results. Medical Acupuncture however is the term used to describe acupuncture performed by a doctor or highly trained practitioner such as Physiotherapist, Osteopath, Chiropractor or Sports Therapist who has been trained and licensed in Western medicine who has also had thorough training in acupuncture as a speciality practice.
As such Medical Acupuncture usually incorporates a range of other soft tissue techniques aside from Needling to effect change and aid in the recovery process of a musculoskeletal injury and is therefore more specifically focused rather than used on large areas of the body.
Benefits of Acupuncture
Acupuncture / Medical Acupuncture is a system offering benefits and influence over three main areas of health care:
- assisting in the promotion of health and well-being,
- aiding in the prevention of illness,
- treatment of numerous medical conditions.
While acupuncture is often associated with pain control, in the hands of a properly-trained practitioner it has much broader applications in the repair and recovery and a number of injuries and illnesses. Acupuncture can be effective as the only treatment used, or as part of a wider series of treatments in many medical and surgical disorders such as Massage, Cupping, Gua Sha etc. The WHO (World Health Organisation) recognises the use of acupuncture in the treatment of a wide range of medical problems, including:
- Digestive disorders such as IBS, Gastritis, Constipation and Diarrhea.
- Respiratory disorders such as Bronchitis, Asthma etc.
- Neurological Disorders such as Migraines and Headaches etc
- Muscular Tightness and Pain such as Neck Pain, Back Pain, Limb Pain, Frozen Shoulder, Tennis & Golfers Elbow, various forms of tendinitis, Sciatica, osteoarthritis and much more.
Acupuncture is particularly useful in resolving physical problems related to tension and stress and emotional conditions as well as many soft tissue and muscular disorders and problems.
